Bastard Eden, Our Chernobyl
“To me, this book speaks of Hope. And Hope held by the people in Chernobyl for a safe and prosperous life, and thus Hope for mankind in the face of such an ominous potential. Ultimately, these are searing documentary photographs.”
— The Photobook
These photographs were taken over three years, in the region of Chernobyl, Ukraine–some 20 years after the nuclear reactor incident of April 26, 1986. This spoiled land is a refuge, the sacred Ukrainian heartland where myths abound. A place Lenin wanted to expunge and Stalin almost succeeded in starving to death. It’s still here. And now people have chosen this land of certain death to give them the illusion of a future.
